120 ADJ Fixtures Turn Up the Heat for Summer Jam 7 Festival
Earlier in the year, Extreme Productions supplied 60 ADJ beam fixtures and 60 LED-powered wash fixtures to illuminate the large main stage at the one-day Summer Jam 7 festival in Amman, the capital city of Jordan. The fixtures were utilized to generate vibrant color washes, crisp GOBO projections, and striking aerial effects throughout the 12-hour open-air event.
Celebrating the beginning of summer and now in its seventh year, Summer Jam is well-established within Jordan’s music scene. This year’s event featured live performances from Arabic rock-jazz fusion musician Aziz Maraka, Syrian singer Ghaliaa, and Lebanese pop star Antoine Massaad, as well as sets from 14 well-known local DJs.
Established in 1997 in Jordan as a local event production company, Extreme Productions has expanded rapidly to become a leading supplier throughout the Middle East. The company owns an extensive inventory of ADJ lighting fixtures, which it deploys for a wide variety of events, ranging from large outdoor concerts and activations to high-profile conferences and exclusive private parties.
Summer Jam 7’s impressive outdoor stage featured a wedge-shaped thrust, rear catwalk, and central DJ booth mounted to a scissor lift to allow it to take prominence during DJ sets and sink out of the way for live performances. An upstage scaffolding structure supported a central LED screen surrounded by décor depicting a giant octopus, while side scaffolding structures were used to rig the PA system and additional screens. The ADJ Vizi Beam 12RX dedicated beam moving heads were positioned around the edge of the thrust stage, along the rear catwalk, and rigged to all three scaffolding structures. This allowed for impressive beam effects that filled the stage and shot up into the night sky, as well as out over the crowd.
“I like the Vizi Beam 12RX very much,” enthuses Georges Keedy, who served as the lighting designer, programmer, and operator for Summer Jam 7, “it’s a beautiful fixture. The combination of speed, a good collection of colors and GOBOs, two useful prism options, and a powerful output mean that it can be used to create some really nice effects.”
The ADJ Vizi Wash Z37 automated wash-zoom fixtures were also spread across the three scaffolding structures. The bulk of these units were rigged at either side of the stage, allowing them to be used as side light as well as for generating additional aerial effects and illuminating the crowd with swathes of vibrant, moving color.
“The Vizi Wash Z37 is very powerful and very flexible,” comments Georges. “It can be used for wide washes but also tight beams, and it even works well as a strobe! With other fixtures, I have to use a random dimmer effect on my console to get a good strobe effect, but the Vizi Wash Z37 has a very effective random strobe effect built-in.”
To enhance the beam effects generated by the moving head fixtures, Extreme Productions utilized four ADJ Entourage touring grade ‘faze’ machines, positioned at each corner of the stage. These powerful atmospheric generators use regular fog fluid, dissipated by an integral fan, to create a thin and far-reaching haze effect. Built into a robust road case, the Entourage is well protected and therefore ideal for deployment directly on busy festival and event stages.
“Even though this was a large outdoor event, the Entourage machines allowed us to ensure all the beams were clearly visible right across the stage and out over the crowd,” explains Georges “They are powerful units that offer a lot of output, and we would only need one or two for a similar-sized indoor stage. But for outdoor events, the wind is always unpredictable, so positioning a unit at each corner of the stage allowed us to ensure good, even coverage throughout the entire show.”
Summer Jam 7 was a very successful event and the start of a busy summer season for Extreme Productions. To equip its team for future growth, the company has recently invested in 50 of ADJ’s new Vizi Beam CMY dedicated beam moving heads, as well as 30 Focus Flex L7 lime-infused automated wash-zoom luminaires, and plans to increase its rental inventory to 100 units of each fixture in the near future.
